Book Review: Focusing on the Next World

Chapter President Mary Rupert reviews Pam Grout's God Doesn't Have Bad Hair Days (Running Press, 2005)

By Mary Rupert

Kansas author Pam Grout has traveled all the continents writing travel stories. She's seen many of the world's greatest sights. Now, with a recent book, she's focusing on the next world.

Grout, a resident of northeast Kansas, is regionally famous for her books, Kansas Curiosities, You Know You're in Kansas When and Living Big: Embrace Your Passion and Leap into an Extraordinary Life. Her recent work, God Doesn't Have Bad Hair Days (Running Press, 2005) veers off the beaten travel path and into another world.

Grout spoke at the May 2006 meeting of the Greater Kansas City  Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications. The Kansas State University graduate told about her experiences in writing articles for such magazines as People, Family Circle, Travel & Leisure and Outside and gave the audience some tips on writing and marketing their work. There was even a funny story about appearing on the Howard Stern radio show to promote one of her books.

God Doesn't Have Bad Hair Days is written in a very informal and humorous style, even using slang for the Almighty. The book has a bit of a Unity church feeling to it. The book uses a worksheet method in teaching its lessons. It tells readers how to use spiritual principles to their own material advantage, but thankfully, by the end of the book it also tells them how to get along better with fellow humans and reminds them there is more to life than just material things.

Its purpose, according to the author, is to help readers add more joy and fulfillment to their lives. It offers plenty of hope for people who read it.

Mary Rupert is president of the Greater Kansas City Professional Chapter of AWC.
