Hospitalized Veterans Writing Project: Healing through the Written Word

Join the Greater Kansas City Chapter of The Association for Women in Communications on May 20 at 5:30 pm at Woodside Raquet Club to hear one of our own tell the inside story of the Hospitalized Veterans Writing Project (HVWP). Pris Chansky, AWC member and HVWP representative, will share stories of how writing can unlock a stale mind and propel it into a positive outlook.

HVWP is a national non-profit headquartered in Greater Kansas City, that produces Veterans' Voices, a therapeutic writing program for hospitalized veterans. HVWP has a long connection with AWC: In 1952, Margaret Sally Keach and Gladys Helzberg, with assistance from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Women in Communications, Theta Sigma Phi, established Veterans' Voices. More AWC-HVWP history...

HVWP makes a difference in the lifes of veterans. Says one writer:

"Veterans' Voices magazine has helped me come out of a very thick shell, one that I would have never thought I could escape from. I have come back to a life that I thought was gone forever. I was in a very deep depression, and death seemed like my only course of action. I had tried to take my life several times. Then a nurse therapist at the VA hospital told me about the HVWP. Writing for this project has kept me alive ever since. And for me, a disabled veteran who was on the brink of suicide, that means a lot!"

What started as an outreach program for veterans returning from World War II has become a respected component of the Department of Veterans Affairs medical center recreation and rehabilitation program. Now, with the return of injured veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan, the project is more important than ever.
